The Non-Profit Media Hub
For Inspiring Media Content on Rural Issues

About RBHub

The Radio Baraza (RB) Hub (RBHub) is set up as a media resource, learning and mentorship initiative for inspiring the development and dissemination of media content that enhance grassroots/rural voices and hence enable communities to speak about issues that affect them most from their own perspectives while also linking them to the discourses at national and international levels.

The overall RB initiative is spearheaded by Development Through Media (DTM) in partnership with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and others actors in the overall development sector who are committed to inspiring progressive changes in the overall media and broadcast environments to be more supportive of media practitioners who aspire to produce content that speak to the needs of all audiences especially at the rural level, in more inclusive, participatory and sensitive ways.

The Inaugural Project

RBHub’s inaugural project is designed to support partners currently implementing the project: Empowering Rural Communities Through Media whose overall objective/impact is to facilitate more effective reporting on rural communities in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania and thereby contribute to the development of more open, inclusive and democratic societies.

DTM is assigned to oversee the aspects for ensuring increased and improved reporting from rural communities in Kenya. This will be achieved through “learning by doing” capacity/skills building activities with participants selected from DTM’s list of Development Reporters (DevReporters) among others. The DevReporters membership comprises young graduates, correspondents and freelancers representing various counties/sub-counties/constituencies from where those who successfully undergo the planned training sessions will report.

About DTM

We are Development Through Media (DTM), among the first development oriented media organizations to set up in Kenya. DTM arose in 1997 as a local idea in response to challenges faced by independent media practitioners.

We proudly target the promotion of development information in an effort to fill the gaps left by mainstream media where issues that are crucial to disadvantaged and vulnerable members of society are often not considered worthy of coverage. This has resulted in the exclusion of a cross-section of society where women, children and youth for example, remain marginalized as their actions and experiences rarely attract headline news or sustained in-depth media engagement in a manner that can bring about positive change.

Thus DTM specifically works towards policy reforms, capacity building, awareness raising and attitude change through the Media in general and audio-visual media in particular.

DTM works mainly in Kenya and also undertakes assignments within the East Africa region and at the international level.

Training 1 (T1)

T1 is the first of a series of training sessions. T1 targets participants from DevReporters selected from various counties within the Lake Region Bloc (LREB). It is designed as a 5-day hands-on training to tool DevReporters with the required practical skills for developing radio and print media content that especially highlight a selection of issues affecting rural communities in the specific counties/constituencies from where the DevReporters will be based and report. After the training, DevReporters will receive continuous mentorship, editorial support and other processes even as they engage in the production of assigned content. The produced content will form part of RBNews bulletin to broadcast/publish on Radio Baraza (RB), where RBNews content will be broadcast on the Live Radio as well as individual podcasts on it’s Listen on-demand (LoD) sections.

The main training activities are designed as in-person sessions and RBHub is intended to enhance these sessions by making additional information accessible to the participants.
