About DTM
We are Development Through Media (DTM), among the first development oriented media organizations to set up in Kenya. DTM arose in 1997 as a local idea in response to challenges faced by independent media practitioners.
We proudly target the promotion of development information in an effort to fill the gaps left by mainstream media where issues that are crucial to disadvantaged and vulnerable members of society are often not considered worthy of coverage. This has resulted in the exclusion of a cross-section of society where women, children and youth for example, remain marginalized as their actions and experiences rarely attract headline news or sustained in-depth media engagement in a manner that can bring about positive change.
Thus DTM specifically works towards policy reforms, capacity building, awareness raising and attitude change through the Media in general and audio-visual media in particular.
DTM works mainly in Kenya and also undertakes assignments within the East Africa region and at the international level.
Our Vision
DTM envisions a well-informed and knowledgeable society that is inclusive and just
Our Mission
DTM’s mission is committed to developing expertise among Media, Communication, PR, film and Arts professionals and establishments in designing and implementing strategies for addressing information needs of development programmes covering diverse areas, so as to facilitating citizens’ effective participation in their aspirations
About AWiTAD
In the Beginning, somewhere in 2016, there was Ziki with an idea for a radio programme to showcase Africa’s Art and Design journey. It took a long time for Development Through Media (DTM) to buy into the idea. This was especially given that the organisation had no funds for such a venture and also its Radio Baraza (RB) online platform on which such a programme would be broadcast was still being reconfigured. Then in late 2017, our producer had a chance meeting with Eve and the ensuing discussions with both Ziki and Eve led to the inclusion of IT aspects in the Podcast and hence the Podcast’s title; African Women in Tech and Design. With Ziki and Eve agreeing to donate their time to hosting the 12 episodes targeted in the inaugural season, the idea for the Podcast was finally concluded.
The African Women in Technology and Design (AWiTaD) Podcast is in essence, intended to feature women of African descent who have built, or are well on their way to building successful businesses in IT and Design. The AWiTaD Podcast, therefore, aims to provide a platform for these women to share their stories and the journeys they have taken to get them where they are today. It also explores their thoughts as they share their plans on future endeavours as business owners and/or influencers in the Tech and Design fields.
The purpose of the AWiTaD Podcast is simple: to share positive information that will encourage every listener, and hopefully, inspire each one of them to dare imagine the possibilities that are out there. Listeners will be motivated to think: “If she can weather the storm, so can I!” Each AWiTaD Podcast will, in addition, provide actionable tips as well as leads to the resources they can tap into to achieve their own dreams.
And there is more! Since its premiere on RB on 10 May 2019, The AWiTAD Podcast series is increasingly becoming the “go-to” place for IT and Design students seeking extra motivation as they continue in their academic journeys in these fields.
So, now you can join our community and have a chance:

Ziki is a science buff with a flair for design. She holds a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Nairobi. She worked as an IT Project Manager and Web Systems Developer for both local and multinational organizations before branching into design. She is currently the Creative Director for Afro Fanatic Ltd – a Kenyan-based clothing and lifestyle brand inspired by Afro culture. Ziki sees these two avenues (tech and design) as powerful creative outlets through which the continent (Africa) can visibly take her place as the valuable contributor to the global economy that she really is. When Ziki is not scouring the city for inspiration and good food, she can be found laying on the grass with her headphones on listening to an audio book somewhere in Nairobi, Kenya.
