Providing Resources for Students and Learners
Brenda Naitore, a Form One student at Alliance Girls High School, describes how the Library impacts education access.
“When I come here, I find resources not available at home. The environment is conducive, there’s a wide catalog of books, the staff is helpful, and the Internet allows me to research,” Says Brenda.
Christopher Njeru, a consultant and Master’s student at Meru University, also appreciates the Library. He explains that its quiet environment helps him focus. He adds that the extensive catalogue of books and robust internet access make research more accessible.
In addition, Rhoda Kendi, a student at the University of Nairobi, explains,
“Instead of engaging in crime, drug abuse, or other negative behaviors, students and youth come here to stay busy. The Library provides books, revision materials, and mentorship programs that have helped improve things in Meru.”
Bridging the Technology Gap
The Meru County Library offers various ICT training programs to help youth become self-reliant. David Mwenda, a 22-year-old from Imenti North, shares his experience.
“The program has been life-changing. At 22, I’ve learned graphic design, enabling me to create posters, logos, and ads to earn a steady income. This skill has helped me and many youth avoid crime, drug abuse, and other harmful behaviors,” explains David.
Willis Awich, ICT Manager at Meru County Library, says the ICT program has significantly advanced SDG Goal 4 on quality education.
“The program reception has been amazing. We offer the ICT training at a subsidized fee of Ksh 500, and the practical lessons, including graphic design, have greatly impacted the community,” Willis explains.
Growing Talent
Beatrice Mathu, a Library Assistant in the children’s department, describes how the Library’s mentorship program for grades 5-7 has helped students publish a short story collection.
“We guide students in writing original fiction. They brainstorm ideas, including through visiting their grandmothers, then create the stories. We edit and publish these online via African Storybook, making them accessible across Kenya and Africa. We’ve also published a hardcover short story collection,” says Beatrice.
Community Support Programmes
Richard Wanjohi, the County Librarian, explains that the Library supports Article 55(a) of the Kenyan Constitution by ensuring youth access to education and promoting equality.
“Girls, often hindered by household chores, are supported through initiatives with organisations like Uzuri Empowerment, that focuses on creating awareness on issues around peer pressure, early pregnancies, and HIV/AIDS. We also offer mentorship for boys, tackling peer pressure, mental health, and drug use, with experts providing guidance and a platform for discussion,” Explains Richard.
