Devolution is a significant change to governance introduced by Kenya’s 2010 constitution. The establishment of county governments through devolution has brought government service delivery closer to the communities.

Access Sports Academies

In Nairobi’s Zimmerman, the county government’s commitment to sports has transformed weekends into a vibrant atmosphere filled with the sounds of whistles and cheering crowds as youth football teams compete.

The local community is witnessing resurgence in sports and cultural activities, thanks to increased support and resources from the county government.

Local youths can access sports academies that foster athletic growth and keep them focused on their sporting aspirations.

David Odhiambo, a young footballer, is one of many beneficiaries of these initiatives aimed at promoting sports in Zimmerman.

“Without these sports academies, I might have ended up being involved in crime or drugs,” David reflects. The academy has provided him with essential opportunities post-high school, allowing him to focus on his football career and steer clear of negative influences.

These sports academies benefit not only boys but also girls, fostering inclusivity in sports.

Linda, captain of the Disciples Sports Ministries, shares her experience, highlighting the supportive environment provided for girls.

“Being part of the Disciples Sports Ministries has been amazing. We get to play football and even receive sanitary pads, which allows us to concentrate on the game without worrying about other challenges,” she explains.

One standout athlete is Lucy, a 17-year-old football prodigy. Despite starting her football journey on the dusty fields of Zimmerman, Lucy’s talent and passion for the game are unstoppable. Under the mentorship of coach Georges Opell, founder of Disciples Sports Ministries, Lucy quickly became a key player for the team.

Instill Positive Values

Opell’s vision for sports development in Zimmerman extends beyond the game itself. His academy is not just about football; it serves as a platform to share the gospel of Christ and instill positive values among the youth.

The transformative power of sports is evident in many lives, providing a constructive alternative to crime and drug abuse.

“There is need for continued support from the county government, to maintain and expand sports and cultural programmes that are transforming our community,” Opell asserts. His call to action underscores the importance of sustained investment in youth programmes, which have already made a significant impact in Zimmerman.

More Structured Funding

While these sports academies have had a positive impact, they continue to face significant challenges.

Many grassroots teams struggle with inadequate funding, which limits their ability to provide essential equipment such as soccer balls, boots, and training attire.

Additionally, coaches encounter barriers to advancing their skills due to lack of support and training opportunities.

The success of Zimmerman’s sports programmes has largely been driven by community involvement, with parents actively encouraging their children’s participation. However, long-term sustainability will necessitate more structured funding and a clear vision from both the county government and other stakeholders.

Immense Potential

There is immense potential for Nairobi County to expand its sports and cultural programmes, according to Coach Opell.

He remains optimistic, emphasising that continued investment in youth sports is critical for maintaining current momentum and ensuring long-term success.

Devolution has undoubtedly set the stage for a sports and cultural resurgence in Nairobi County. While challenges remain, the progress in Zimmerman offers a promising glimpse of what can be achieved when the county government, communities and youth, unite to foster positive change through sports.
