A sector known for all manner of evil can now be accepted in our society. Research has it that in every home there is at least one bodaboda operator.
In an event presided over by interior PS Karanja Kibicho, over 1.5 million bodaboda operators across all the 47 counties promised to uphold peace in the forthcoming election. NCIC also reaffirmed its commitment to the #elections bilanoma campaign, reiterating that the bodaboda sector is critical in promoting peaceful coexistence during the electoral process.
Talking to RBNews, several BodaBoda operators confirmed that the sector no longer entertains hooliganism.
“That issue of hiring us to disrupt an opponent’s rally is long gone, even though there are a few individuals who have refused to change.” They said.
The group contends that the sector has knowledgeable people who can discern leaders who are development oriented and those who are not. The group added that while it may not be easy to reject the handouts, politicians should however carefully think about the impact of dishing out cash to the public for short-term gains.
“While handouts may exist, we know better to scrutinize their manifestos than to take the hand outs.” Says Dan Odhiambo
Through its leadership, the sector is now engaged in efforts to hold leaders accountable for their actions. Members say that leaders are trying to leave a legacy at the end of their current terms and the sector has used the moment to achieve a lot. For example, many roads within Siaya County have now been improved.
“We are very happy with what has been achieved within the road sector. Nevertheless, some leaders will still not make it back to office because of party elections but we shall miss them.” Says Mr. Otude.
On the other hand, Florence Amollo, a young woman, asks politicians not to engage in confrontations that can cause death or injuries to the electorate.
“ We are requesting those vying to know that incase of demonstrations, its our children, brothers and more so our women who suffer most, so kindly keep peace both during and after elections.” Florence Amollo reiterates.
