Trans Nzoia County faces a critical challenge in improving the economy and standards of living of its residents. High levels of poverty, which according to government records is over 50 percent, is making the living standards of many residents in the county to worsen at a high rate.

Sarah, a single mother of four, is a businesswoman who also works in the maize plantations. Sarah can be found busy carrying out what she says are her a daily activities to help provide for her children.

Sarah has been a single mother for more than 10 years now. She shares a glimpse into her life and how she manages to raise and educate her children as single mother.

Single Motherhood Journey

“Some of us became single mothers by choice, but some are forced into it. Regardless of how one gets here [single motherhood] there are usually times of despair,” says Sarah.

She further shares that it has been a tough journey for her living in a one-bedroom house that goes for Ksh 300 a month and providing for her family with the little money she gets from her business.

Challenges Faced

“Being a single mum is hard, sometimes you need support, especially when it comes to paying school fees, providing guidance, food and a decent environment for your family. But still, I must carry on with all the responsibilities as a parent”.

She adds that the whole situation is overwhelming, but she gets joy when her kids are supportive, which has made her journey of raising them smooth.

Despite all the challenges she faces, Sarah contends that she will always ensure that her children are in school and are fed.

Bursaries And Scholarships

Needy students in the area receive bursaries and scholarships from the government. Sarah says that the scholarship one of her children received lessened the burden of school fees on her.

“Recently I received Elimu scholarship from the county government for my girl who was joining form one” says Sarah.

According to the County Commissioner, Mr Samson Ojwang, the government is committed to supporting education and also providing employment to people living in slums to help them boost their living standards. He concluded by saying that they have initiatives and strategies aimed at alleviating the poverty problem in the county.
